UF study: female ministers face pettiness, patriarchy, pressures
GAINESVILLE — The ordained ministry remains one of the most male-dominated of all professions, with women making up no more than 14 percent of the clergy in any major religious denomination in the United States. And those women who have entered the ministry have hit the stained glass ceiling. Those findings and others come from a new University of Florida (UF) study by Jesse Schultz, a UF sociology graduate student who completed the study for her thesis.      Full Story
Sea planes, kayaks replace pews at Beymer's dockside service

WINTER HAVEN - Jesus walked on water, and part of the congregation at Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church here worships on water. The church, which is located on the shores of Lake Howard, is holding a half-hour dockside service every Sunday morning from Memorial Day to Labor Day that's attracting boaters, kayakers and even the occasional sea plane pilot.

Bishops' Initiative awards 28 new grants

LAKELAND - While the United Methodist Council of Bishops voted May 6 to continue its Initiative on Children and Poverty (BICAP) for another four years, the Florida Conference's response to the initiative may be losing momentum. After awarding $76,000 in grants June 15 to 28 ministries across the conference that are geared toward helping children and impoverished people, the Florida Conference's BICAP task force now has about $10,000 left and another round of grants scheduled for this fall. Church helps kids make school honor roll

prime time kidGAINESVILLE - Last fall, teachers at Lake Forest Elementary School in East Gainesville believed the 19 children registered for the Prime Time after-school program at Christ United Methodist Church here didn't have much chance of advancing to middle school. Last month, all 19 children graduated, 10 of them with honors.   Full Story  

Florida clergywomen respond to UF study
LAKELAND - The Florida Conference ranks slightly behind the national average of the number of clergywomen serving the conference with 11 percent in 1997, according to the Rev. Debbie McLeod, associate pastor at Christ Church United Methodist in Ft. Lauderdale and chairwoman of the Florida Conference Board of Ordained Ministry. How does the conference rank in terms of accepting women as pastors? Florida's clergywomen were invited to respond to the UF study and share their experiences.     Full Story
