LAKELAND The United Methodist Council of Bishops voted May 6 to
continue its Initiative on Children and Poverty (BICAP) for another four years, according
to a release from the United Methodist News Service.
On June 15, the Florida Conferences BICAP task force continued its efforts to
move forward with the initiative by awarding $76,000 in grants to 28 ministries across the
conference geared toward helping children and impoverished people.
The money for the grants and those awarded since the initiative began in 1997 came from
offerings collected by conference churches and at annual conference events.
Since June 1997, Florida Conference churches have raised more than $346,840 for the
initiative, including $55,709.82 given at the Dare to Share Jesus 1999 Florida Annual
Conference Event. Of that amount, $332,700 has been awarded to 123 churches and
ministries.
The latest round of awards has nearly depleted the task forces funds, which now
total about $10,000. At an average of $2,000 per grant, the task force will be able to
offer funding to only five ministries this fall.
The most recent grants were given to ministries offering after-school, day-care and
preschool programs; youth ministries; computer training; homeless ministries; summer camp;
vacation Bible school; family recreation; transitional housing for women and children;
job-training; and literacy programs.
