Sea planes, kayaks replace pews at new service

By Michael Wacht

WINTER HAVEN — Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church in Winter Haven held its fourth waterside worship service June 20.

Although the half-hour service is still evolving, the Rev. Robert Hornback says it has produced some interesting results.

  • A non-member worshipper arrived in a sea plane and said he would tell other sea plane pilots about the service.
  • A local kayaking organization promised to publicize the event in its member newsletter.
  • Bicyclists passing the church have stopped and listened to the service.
  • A church member who has been unable to enter the sanctuary because of memories associated with her mother who died recently now worships at the dock.
  • Two children of a family that became involved with the church through the dockside service are being baptized at the Aug. 8 service.
  • Plans are being made to hold a wedding and communion service.

Hornback says the dockside ministry presents some challenges, but the church is overcoming the obstacles and making the service a success.

"It hasn’t fizzled," he said. "This service could be quite the thing by the end of the summer."
