By Charles W. Courtoy
Executive Director of Church Development

Charles Courtoy, Executive Director of Church DevelopmentDuke Divinity School will conduct its fifth National Institute for New Church Development Sept. 19-24 at The Summit near Greensboro, N.C. This highly stimulating event offers new styles of worship experiences, challenging plenary sessions, practical how-to workshops and invaluable networking opportunities.

More than 40 pastors from the Florida Conference have attended the Duke Institute as part of the Discernment Program.

The stated purposes of the Institute are to provide pastors with theological and practical tools for starting new churches, allow potential new church pastors to discover the gifts necessary for effective ministry in a new church setting, and provide an opportunity for new church pastors to network and share with one another through learning, worship and fellowship.

Pastors and other leaders will be equipped for new church development through:

  • theological reflection and biblical study,
  • development of practical skills and knowledge,
  • discussion of various new church models and styles of worship,
  • sharing of ideas with other new church pastors and experienced practitioners, and
  • reflection on current trends in American religion and new church development.

Mike Regele, president of Percept Group and author of “Death of the Church,” and I will be the presenters for the five plenary sessions.

In addition to the five sessions, each participant will enroll in four, three-hour workshops taught by practitioners in new church development. Workshops offered include: Strategic Planning; Utilizing Lay Leadership; Financing the New Church; Invitational Outreach; Community Based Ministry; New Church Development in Low Income Settings; Leadership for Multicultural Churches; Understanding the Generations; Preaching and Worship; Music, Music, Music!; Small Group Ministry; Spiritual Gifts; Profile of a Church Planter; and Ministry Within Hispanic Cultures
