School of Ministry focuses on action How to carry out the mission of the church is the focus of the 1999
Florida Annual Conference School of Ministry Oct. 4-7 at the Life Enrichment Center in
Leesburg.
Titled "Gotta Do It! Mission of the Church," the schools presentations
focus on aspects of the churchs mission, including managing, doing, empowering and
re-visioning the mission; nurturing leaders; and remembering the missions Biblical
foundation.
Among the weekends leaders are Roy M. Oswald, senior consultant for The Alban
Institute and author and teacher of clergy self-care; Mickey Elfrid, professor of Biblical
interpretation at the Divinity School at Duke University; Judy Christie, editor of
"Florida Today;" the Rev. Rudy and Juanita Rasmus, pastoral team at St.
Johns United Methodist Church in Houston; Rob Frost, Methodist national evangelist
for the United Kingdom; and Jim Mellado, president of the Willow Creek Association. The
Revs. Calvin McFadden and Trall Heitzenrater will lead the events music.
Registration is $35 before Sept. 24. Housing and meal costs vary depending on

Weekend offers training, strengthening, renewal
Laity and clergy can learn to be better leaders, teachers and ministers; receive
renewal and inspiration; and network with others in similar ministries at the 1999
Discipleship Weekend Sept. 24-26 at the Life Enrichment Center in Leesburg.
Tom Tufts, missionary to youth and families at Westwood Church of God in Kalamazoo,
Mi., is the keynote speaker. The former PGA golf pro started his ministry with eight
youth. That group became "eXtreme faith," a student-led ministry to unchurched
youth.
Participants may attend three of 48 workshops in the areas of children, youth, adult,
outreach and education ministry; teacher certification; personal nurture; and leadership.
The cost is $40 plus accommodations. The registration deadline is Sept. 10. For more

Singles, ministers invited to adventure in Orlando
Single adults and individuals involved in ministry to single adults are invited to
attend the "Adventures in Orlando" Singles Expo Oct. 1-3 in Orlando. The weekend
features worship, workshops, vendor exhibits, displays by single adult ministries and
recreational activities at Orlando area attractions.
Susan Page, author of "If Im So Wonderful, Why Am I Still Single?" and
veteran of radio and television talk shows, is the keynote speaker. Her presentations
include "Seven Strategies of Successful Singles" and "Soul and Heart: The
Spiritual Single in the Relationship Game." Worship presenters include laity and
clergy from throughout the Southeastern Jurisdiction, including the Rev. Nancy Wood,
Lynette Fields and Carol Sue Hutchinson.
The event is sponsored by the Southeastern Jurisdiction Singles Association in
cooperation with St. Lukes United Methodist Church in Orlando. Accommodations are
available at the Caribe Royale Resort Suites for $149 plus tax per suite per night for up
to four people. Registration for the full event is $99 before Sept. 1.

Worship, fellowship and
fun outdoors are on the schedule for the Labor Day Family Camp Sept. 3-6 at the Life
Enrichment Center family campground in Leesburg. The cost is $4, plus campground fees of

Hikers are invited to
participate in the Florida Conference Adult Trail Hike Oct. 11-17 at Cloudland Canyon

The deadline for Church
and Society grant applications has been extended to Sept. 15. The grants range from $500
to $2,000 and are designed to assist local church ministries to people dealing with
