Student leaders meet in Atlanta

Students, campus ministers and pastors across the country are invited to attend The Student Forum, a leadership development conference for college and university students sponsored by the United Methodist Student Movement.

Themed "Peace: Obey Your Thirst," it is May 25-28 at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Ga.

The event is designed to provide leadership training, theological education and faith enrichment, and students will have an opportunity to voice concerns about United Methodism today.

Its focus will be on how "Christ, the Prince of Peace, can help them [students] quench their thirst for a global community in a world torn by violence, mistrust and misunderstanding," according to The Student Forum’s Web site.

Workshops include "Beyond Racism: The Things That Make for Peace," "Being a Global Christian Today," and others.

The cost is $135 before April 7 and $150 thereafter. Register by April 28. For more information, visit The Student Forum’s Web site at http://www.umsm.org/studentforum or contact Jana Hart, director of the conference’s Higher Education and Campus Ministry, at bhecmjh@aol.com or 1-800-282-8011, extension 146.

UMCOR calls for flood,
storm relief in Africa

A helicopter pilot plucking a child from the murky waters or a newborn who is passed from its parent on a tree top to the hands of an aid worker from a moving helicopter.

These are the dramatic images being seen as the people of Mozambique deal with the recent flooding plaguing the country. Now, they are threatened with a tropical cyclone and more heavy rain, according to Reuters News Service.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is already responding to the region’s needs with supplies and funding. It has sent $80,000 and predicts the relief effort will cost millions more over the next several years.

UMCOR is asking United Methodists to also support the Mozambique Flood Response through the Advance for Christ and His Church, UMCOR Advance #156500-0. Funds collected through Florida Conference churches can be sent to the Florida Conference Treasurer, P.O. Box 3767, Lakeland, FL 33802.

For more information on the Mozambique response, visit http://gbgm-umc.org/storms/affloods.stm   and http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor-hotline/h200225.stm   or call the conference’s Missions Ministry office at 1-800-282-8011, extension 132.
