members angry over legal fund
According to public opinion polling company, Rasmussen
Research, 55 percent of Americans believe Elián González should be returned to Cuba; 29
percent say he should stay in the United States. Many members of the Florida United
Methodist Conference are also divided on the issue and struggling over the boy's fate.
That debate was made more emotional by a recent decision by the
denomination's General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) to collect funds to provide
legal services for the boy's father. Full Story

District superintendent
suspended
The Rev. John Green, superintendent of the Florida United Methodist
Conference's Sarasota District, was suspended March 30 after a complaint was filed against
him for misappropriation of district and conference funds. The suspension is for 60 days,
in accordance with the Book of Discipline. During that time an investigation into district
finances will be made.

Delegates reading, praying
about General Conference
The Florida Conference's
delegates to this year's United Methodist General Conference are finding that a big part
of their job is sorting through thousands of pages of information from conference
organizers and hundreds more from groups trying to influence them on the conference's hot
issues. Despite the deluge of information, several delegates say they are focusing on
prayer, worship and personal conversations to prepare for the May 2-12 assembly in
Cleveland, Ohio. Full Story

Fear turns to praise in
prison
Members of the Circuit Riders Male Choir at Orlando's Ebenezer
United Methodist Church were not sure they wanted to go with their pastor, the Rev.
Jeffrey Oglesby, into a high-security prison near Orlando to lead a worship service.
After the service, however, they knew they had done God's will.
"You don't often get the chance to do Christ's real work," said Willie Scott, a
member of the choir. "When you do, you say, 'Man, I'm into something cool.' "
