Surprise
election sends Whitaker to Florida
The Rev. Timothy Wayne Whitaker, former district superintendent
of the Virginia Annual Conference's Norfolk District, was elected bishop and assigned to
the Florida Conference Feb. 27 at a special session of the Southeastern Jurisdictional
Conference.
Whitaker's election came as a surprise to many delegates and the
bishop-elect himself. Whitaker withdrew from the election the first night of the session
after being nominated earlier that day. He re-emerged on the 13th ballot and was elected
on the 17th ballot.
Whitaker's appointment is effective April 2.

during a service of thanksgiving and remembrance Feb. 27.
Bishop James R. King Jr. of the Louisville Area, who called Henderson
his mentor and friend, said Henderson had many positive characteristics, but underneath
those was a man who was "on fire for the Lord." Full

Courtoy has developed a model of innovation and change in how the
Florida Conference starts new churches, but is also handing a number of challenges to his
