Bishop's Corner

Home, Again!

By Bishop Cornelius L. Henderson

Bishop Cornelius L. HendersonThe Southeastern Jurisdictional Committee on Episcopacy reassigned Dorothye and me to the Florida Area for the 2000-2004 quadrennium. Leadership for our Florida Conference Committee was provided by Dr. Riley P. Short. This committee was invaluable as they advised and supported us as we sought to serve this Episcopal area.

Human expression cannot begin to articulate our appreciation for this conference during the past quadrennium. We traveled to each of our 14 districts. In essence, we had listening sessions. These experiences were arranged and coordinated by our district superintendents. Each member of our cabinet and I met with both laity and clergy to discuss the mission of our annual conference. We will repeat this process of quality time apart during this current quadrennium. We shall seek to listen again to pastors and laity as to where our conference is and where we are called to go, as we are obedient to the great commission to "go and make disciples."

The high quality of devoted leadership on the part of our district superintendents is commendable. Expressions of gratitude are in order for these servants of the church. Without exception, they have served our conference and the church with diligence, devotion and dedication.

Our cabinet will gather in the St. Petersburg District in a retreat setting. We will thank God for the past, provide ministries for the present and make plans for the future. We will share some of the exciting challenges from this team in the next edition of the Florida United Methodist Review. I truly believe that…the best is yet to come!
